Annual Meeting 2009

The July 2009 Reporter contains a summary of the 2009 Annual Meeting. Highlights of the meeting include:

  • *Unanimous acceptance of Milwaukee Mennonite Church
  • *Recommendation for membership of Emmaus Road Mennonite Fellowship , a new congregation located in Berne, Indiana. Delegates will take official action on the recommendation in 2010.
  • *Delegates were invited to tie a knot in one of seven prayer quilts. As they tied the knot, they were invited to pray for the intended recipient of the quilt.
  • *Ten congregations completed the Return To The Earth study and donated 40 burial boxes and shipping cost of $30 per box for this MCC project. A wallhanging of the Return To The Earth logo was created by Dorothy Schrock and sold via silent auction, raising additional funds for the project.
  • *Delegates donated non-perishable food items and $412 for the local food pantry, Harbor of Hope
  • *President Gordon Oyer delivered the State of the Conference address . He shared a timeline and plan initiated by the Board of Directors to hold regional meetings during 2009-2010 for the purpose of 1) clarifying CDC's way of relating (polity) as a core element of our identity, and 2) discussing what criteria might be used to welcome other congregations into CDC's relationship
  • *Delegates affirmed a $200,000 spending plan for 2009-2010
  • *$15,000 additional funding is needed due to First Berne leaving the conference. All 24 members of the Leadership Council have pledged $5,900 of the needed amount. Congregations and individuals are invited to pledge an additional $9000 by September 30. If the amount needed is not pledged, the Board has earmarked which expenditures will be eliminated from the spending plan.
  • *Delegates affirmed the 2009-2010 Slate
  • *Delegates affirmed two constitutional changes
  • *Ched Myers of Bartemaeus Cooperative Ministries challenged participants to examine their relationship with and within the empire. Using the words of Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury, he reminded delegates that "It's not the church of God that has a mission, but the mission of God that has a church."
  • Congregations were encouraged to provide health care for all pastors and church workers in the denomination by participating in The Corinthian Plan .
  • Delegates were introduced to a pilot initiative to help congregations nourish and sustain relationships with each other by having a representative from each congregation become a "Friend." "We want CDC Friends to tell and share stories with other Friends," said Megan Ramer. "The more we hear from other congregations, the better connected we become as a conference."
